Although the play on the field doesn’t match the Bears’ dreadful eight-conference-game losing streak, they need to win this weekend’s series against Oregon State (19-14) to preserve any hopes of a fifth straight postseason appearance.

The Bears were nearly swept by the Utah Utes in their first series of Pac-12 play over the weekend and gave up two games to a team that had won only 11 of its 24 games up until its three-game slate against Cal.

Cal softball leaves Florida tournament with stunning wins, disappointing losses

Cal softball, similarly, seemed to hit preseason highs and lows this weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational in Florida, where the Bears played five teams — four of which were ranked in the top 25, according to Softball America — and lost to three of them.

Cal softball starts promising season with 3 victories in first tournament

OK, yeah. Maybe the phrase “come out swinging” has become a bit of a trope.
But that’s exactly what Cal softball did over the weekend in Lafayette, Louisiana at the Ragin’ Cajuns Classic as the team secured its first three wins of their season with flying colors and dropped two against a top-20 team.

reshman Mikayla Coelho led the Bears’ offensive attack in the regionals, batting .571 in seven at-bats to go along with four walks. Coelho’s success culminated in three RBI and three runs scored over the three games.

Cal softball finishes 3-2 over 5-day stretch in Honolulu

The highlight, without question, was junior Kamalani Dung, who threw a perfect game in her home state. Dung had a fantastic series as a whole, posting a 1.23 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched while striking out 25 batters.
