On one side were conservative demonstrators — led by Trump supporter Amber Cummings — who believe that they were participating in a righteous crusade to rid UC Berkeley of its leftist hegemony. On the other side were left-wing groups that call themselves “anti-fascists” while making true fascists proud of their attempts at censorship.

Robles, who is a conservative, came to Berkeley on Feb. 1, 2017, to see Milo Yiannopoulos speak. She alleged that she was assaulted at the event with pepper spray and “struck” by flagpoles, according to court documents. She also alleged that defendant Raha Miradbal — who Robles claims is a member of "antifa," a term for anti-fascist groups — shone a flashlight in her eyes “to incapacitate” her and other Yiannopoulos supporters so others could “physically assault them.”

Public universities are a world unto themselves, complete with chancellors who exploit public funds for private gain, ill-advised plans to renovate stadiums, staggering amounts of debt and stomping grounds for the likes of Milo Yiannopoulos.

Founded in March 2009 in the wake of former president Barack Obama’s inauguration and the formation of the tea party, the Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies, or CRWS, is a stand-alone research unit under the campus Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, or ISSI.

Some former ASUC members have become politicians, including state Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, who served as the academic affairs vice president and a leader in the anti-apartheid movement on campus during her time as a UC Berkeley student.

The event was organized to demonstrate the campus's interest in holding meaningful debates with people who hold different viewpoints, including conservative points of view.

When conservative speaker Milo Yiannopoulos decided he would come back to UC Berkeley, he made it clear that “come hell or high water,” nothing was going to stand in his way.

BCR is absolutely right to bring a lawsuit against the campus, for the campus has, time and again, egregiously impeded their right to bring controversial speakers to campus while making no such demands from groups on the other side of the spectrum.

We must cement a more coherent and explicit ontology of “free speech.” It is failure to clearly delineate the parameters of freedom of and freedom from speech
