Through both art and journalistic reporting, writers and photographers alike forge forward to establish the sense of place that the Mission undoubtedly deserves. According to Delaney, through art, “we name where we are.”

On Oct. 12, the SOMArts Cultural Center, a nonprofit art enclave in the heart of San Francisco, opened its 19th annual exhibition in celebration of Día de los Muertos. The exhibit, brought to life the theme “Honoring our Ancestors by Fighting for the Future.”

Grey Davies, a campus junior and rising musician, performed a set of songs off her first album as part of Balanced BreakFEST 2018 in San Francisco, a three-day music festival in the Mission District.

The festival was meant to reflect the potency of music not just for the sake of music, but music as a community-unifying force.

Conceived in 2006 and named for San Francisco’s notoriously chilly summers, SFFFF defines itself as “an independent grassroots movement.”

Upon arriving in San Francisco in 2002, Spanish multi-instrumentalist and composer Raúl Vargas, now a member of the band Makrú, did not intend to stay.

Poetry, at its best, can resonate deeply and at times even challenge deep-seated paradigms we hold about the world around us.

For me and for millions of people, Anthony Bourdain's infinite curiosity, respect for other cultures and joy for community is a blueprint for the good life.

Onlookers revelled not only in the sheer beauty of the parade on Sunday, but also in the cultural visibility it afforded.
