UC Berkeley doctoral candidates Ataya Cesspooch and Sierra Edd and doctoral student Breylan Martin published a collective statement Nov. 11 about campus associate professor Elizabeth Hoover, who released a statement Oct. 20 rescinding her previous claim to Native American ancestry.

California Native American students from both federally and non-federally recognized tribes will have their university tuition and fees waived for the 2022-2023 academic year. 

At a college with thousands of students, it can seem difficult to find a community. However, communities on campus have coalesced to offer support.

During its Thursday meeting, the Graduate Assembly discussed a partnership with the Native American campus community to share Anthony Hall.

On Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a press release proclaiming November 2020 as Native American Heritage Month.

Underrepresented student groups and organizations, including the community of students with disabilities and Indigenous student organizations, have faced long-standing challenges in their fight for allocated spaces on campus. 

A UC Berkeley study to be published this month shows that out of more than 1,000 Native Americans surveyed, at least half were offended by the Washington Redskins' name and Native mascots, according to a UC Berkeley press release.

From Emeryville to Berkeley, the Ohlone tribe, one of the dominant Native American tribe in the Bay Area, has protested development on what they believe to be sacred land. But according to Phenocia Bauerle, director of the Native American Student Development, they have yet to be federally recognized.

The University of California Retirement Plan, or UCRP, currently holds bonds in Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco Logistics, the two companies that are building the Dakota Access Pipeline.
