ASUC Senate discusses student life, hears presentation on campus policing

The ASUC Senate discussed the potential reopening of parts of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union, the Cesar E. Chavez Student Center and Eshleman Hall for student use.

The 2020-21 ASUC Senate has fully begun its functions, passing resolutions as well as discussing student life and campus policing at its meeting Wednesday.

UC Berkeley independent advisory board recommends demilitarizing UCPD, funding mental health resources

The Independent Advisory Board on Police Accountability and Community Safety released its report on the UCPD on June 30, recommending more than 25 changes that aim to create a safer campus environment and increase police accountability.

To limit overcrowding in what are usually popular spots during the celebrations, UC Berkeley campus parking lots and Grizzly Peak Boulevard will be closed July 4, as high fire danger is expected.

The shelter-in-place ordinance issued by the city of Berkeley in March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 has emptied the normally busy streets of the city and campus, reducing police calls for service and shifting the daily lives of officers on duty.

PG&E has administered a Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, affecting about 100,000 out of Alameda County’s approximate 1.7 million residents beginning Wednesday at 8 p.m. until current weather conditions, which are conducive to wildfires, change.

California passes law requiring police to use force only when ‘necessary’

Under AB 392, force must only be used when “necessary” rather than when “reasonable.” The bill, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Aug. 19, specifies that officers must use other resources and techniques to address threats instead of deadly force.
