As storms continued in Berkeley the past weeks, disproportionately affecting the unhoused community, volunteers played a significant role in emergency shelters. 

As a month of heavy rainfall and cold weather continue, houseless individuals face an onslaught of foreseen challenges. 

The North Berkeley Senior Center opened on Aug. 29 after being delayed by the complications of COVID-19 since last spring. 

The Berkeley Community Environmental Advisory Commission, or CEAC, met Thursday to discuss updates for issues including the Measure T1 Infrastructure Bond Program and water quality.

As another wildfire season looms over the Bay Area, the local homeless population remains uncertain of what services will be offered to them.

Richard Castrillon, director of the North Berkeley Senior Center, said he believed it was very important to show that the event was open to anyone, making this idea clear with the “Come as You Are” theme. The Berkeley Commission on the Status of Women held a public meeting Wednesday evening, during which several women shared their experiences with homelessness and Berkeley City Councilmember Sophie Hahn spoke about her life’s work fighting for women’s rights.

The North Berkeley Senior Center will close in January — and will remain closed for the duration of 2019 — for seismic retrofitting and maintenance upgrades.

In light of the lack of sufficient shelter space and widespread government-funded mask dissemination, some UC Berkeley students have taken it upon themselves to provide aid to people unable to escape the unhealthy air.

The Berkeley Commission on Aging gathered for an "Age Friendly Forum" on Wednesday to hear the results of a communitywide survey and to voice its opinions about how a changing city could effectively include its elderly residents.
