UC Berkeley tops its previous record-breaking student applications for the upcoming fall semester amid concerns with housing and the enrollment cap.

The UC system welcomed a record number of California freshmen, underrepresented students and community college transfers in its newest class of admits.

Olufemi Ogundele, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management and dean of undergraduate admissions, answered questions and discussed changes to UC Berkeley’s admissions process to increase the diversity of incoming classes during a Berkeley Conversations event.

While the UC Berkeley department of undergraduate admissions has previously been inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement in its outreach and yield efforts, a constitutional amendment prevents changes to be made to the admissions process.

Both the UC system and UC Berkeley announced a record high number of high school students applying for freshman admission for fall 2021.

After a concerted effort to increase diversity for the UC Berkeley 2020-21 incoming class, campus admitted its most ethnically diverse class in more than 30 years and has seen an increase in first-generation students from last year.

According to a letter written by Stephen Sutton, vice chancellor of student affairs, Ogundele will begin his role Jan. 1, 2019. Before he begins, Silvia Marquez will continue to serve as interim director.
