It is incredibly disheartening and disappointing that a research institution as long-established as UC Berkeley is still being cited for gross neglect — if not mistreatment — of its laboratory animals.

The USDA cited UC Berkeley laboratories after a monkey was found with “sunken eyes, crumbling stool and no urine” — symptoms consistent with dehydration.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, filed a formal complaint with the US Department of Agriculture on May 12, urging the department to investigate possible violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act in UC Berkeley laboratories. 

Following multiple reports of bats sustaining injuries or dying during UC Berkeley research, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, alleged that UC Berkeley mistreats bats in animal facilities and called upon campus to switch to safer, human-based research.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, is calling for a state audit of five UC campuses that it alleges may have used public funds for nonessential animal experiments.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked Chancellor Carol Christ for permission to place a banner underneath the Campanile reading “It’s High Time We Went Vegan. PETA.” In an email, campus spokesperson Janet Gilmore said that campus has not yet responded.
