Berkeley community reflects on fiscal year 2022 budget, police alternatives

In June 2011, then Berkeley City Councilmember Jesse Arreguín was involved in the passage of the city’s budget for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. At the time, 54% of the budget was dedicated to public safety, with the Berkeley Police Department receiving roughly $55 million.

During Tuesday’s Berkeley City Council meeting, city deputy manager David White presented his office’s budget recommendations for fiscal year 2022. In the report, White said the city should allocate $8 million to expand its Specialized Care Unit, or SCU.
