Our society is hurtling toward globalization. And as we edge nearer to an international community, issues such as the environment will cross borders.

We — PG&E, the American government and the international community — must be proactive, because mitigation is not enough.

At a time when the rights of these individuals are being threatened on a daily basis, the Berkeley community as a whole must stand up. Everyone is capable of perpetuating transphobia, and therefore, everyone must combat the culture that marginalizes transgender, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming people.

UC Berkeley’s research on gender and sexuality has contributed to our understanding of how gender and sex are entwined notions and how the production of genders engages layers of personal experience, institutions, relations of power, and shifting hierarchies and opportunities.

Science must be nonpartisan and tangibly inform political decision making. Scientists of both parties are obligated to model the nonpartisan nature of science, to ensure that these decisions are made with bipartisan engagement and uncompromised scientific support.
