Pride Month

Shortly before leaving for college, I cut off my hair, replaced all my clothes and began going by a gender-neutral variant of my given name. I was unprepared for the transitions that would follow.

Most people say small-town Pride events don’t compare to those in the big cities, such as San Francisco or Los Angeles, however I have to disagree. I love attending the parade and being able to see the direct support from my favorite restaurants in town, or visiting a booth set up by a close friend.

Even if you don’t identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, reading queer literature is an important doorway — one that leads toward creating a more accepting world that celebrates attraction and love in all its beautiful forms.

What makes Zolita such a meaningful artist is her dedication to spotlighting unique experiences of queerness alongside universal themes of young love, obsession, breakup and hurt. 

Few words have entered our modern lexicon as pervasively as the word “slay,” and like many other slang words, its history is interesting and culturally important.

Now that it’s June, one can no longer hide from all the rainbows and corporate-virtue signaling for Pride Month. As someone from the LGBTQ+ community, I wanted to switch it up and give a voice to an underrepresented group: straight men.
