Proposition 10

California is in a serious housing crisis — and yet, California voters failed to pass Proposition 10 to repeal Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act and allow for much needed rent control.

Rashi Kesarwani and Igor Tregub will enter into an instant run-off for the District 1 seat, after no candidate received the absolute majority with 100 percent of precincts reporting as of press time.

Berkeley residents had a chance to vote on seven local measures — three Alameda County measures, four city of Berkeley measures — on their November ballots. All passed as of press time about 2 a.m.

In the race for Berkeley’s Rent Stabilization Board, the Community Power Slate — which includes James Chang, Paola Laverde, John Selawsky, María Poblet and Soli Alpert — won the available seats as of press time at 2 a.m.

Proposition 1 authorizes $4 billion in general obligation bonds to fund affordable housing for veterans, working families, seniors, people with disabilities and homeless residents. The measure does not increase taxes, but California would have to repay about $170 million annually for the next 35 years.

There are powerful forces fighting the housing crisis that have the power to affect every person who sets foot in Berkeley: the Rent Stabilization Board.

This November, Berkeley voters have the opportunity to bring their city new representation at the state level. There are several critical seats up for election, including governor, secretary of state and state Assembly member in the 15th District — and Californians must to do their civic duty by showing up to the polls.

Five of the candidates — James Chang, Judy Hunt, Paola Laverde, María Poblet and John Selawsky – have prior experience as rent board commissioners. Only three — Soli Alpert, David Buchanan and William “Three Hundred” Caldeira — have not previously served on the board.

Homeless services, affordable housing and the environment are among the issues Berkeley residents will vote on in the November election. Here is the breakdown for the four measures — Measures O, P, Q and R — that the Berkeley City Council placed on the ballot.
