Eight UC Berkeley faculty were elected to the National Academy of Sciences this year, bringing the number of living campus faculty in the NAS up to 135.

According to Rena Dorph, the Lawrence Hall of Science's interim director, the hall emphasizes studying how people from diverse communities learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The National Science Foundation granted the Science and Technology Center on Real-Time Functional Imaging, or STROBE, $24 million over a five year period. Researchers said that the cooperative efforts of experts in different fields, along with the diversity of resources and technologies accessible to participating institutions will enable more productive research.

Using an avant-garde X-ray technique, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researchers recently made the first direct measurements of liquid crystals’ molecular structure — marking possible performance improvements to liquid-crystal displays in smartphone and computer screens.
