Although the Berkeley Unified School District board meeting Wednesday had a packed agenda with various items, the topic of Black Lives Matter and supporting Black families continually resurfaced throughout the evening.

Ana Vasudeo — a local mother, first-generation graduate from Cornell University and strong advocate for closing the achievement gap — is running for the 2020 board of Berkeley Unified School District.

In anticipation of higher enrollment, the Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously at a meeting last Wednesday to create new classroom space at elementary schools for the next two school years.

Judy Appel and incumbent Beatriz Leyva-Cutler won the two director positions on the Berkeley Unified School District School Board of Education Tuesday night, winning over two other candidates.

Berkeley residents Judy Appel, Norma J.F. Harrison and Tracy Hollander are challenging incumbent School Board Director and Clerk Beatriz Leyva-Cutler for the two seats.

Workers at Berkeley High School’s old gym began demolition of the building last week. The construction on the new gym is scheduled to begin in the fall and finish in November 2013.
