It’s no longer fun when your responsibilities and leisure coincide through the same medium.

As I sit down to write this, though, none of those drafts feel right. There’s so much to say yet also nothing at all. How do you encapsulate four years of your life in 850 cohesive words?

I am a very different person from freshman me. I am a natural continuation of freshman me. I am because of you.

You see, I could be going to another city, like New York. I could be doing a graduate program, but I wouldn’t do that because I intend to stay and relive my glory days here at Berkeley. Forever.

Commitment to me has always meant offering up all of my energy and emotion and everything to fulfill expectations and make everyone as happy as possible. Nowhere was there space for my own happiness, my own interests, my own life.

English and music double major and sophomore Mia Shelton is running for ASUC Academic Affairs Vice President, or AAVP, on platforms of holistic wellbeing, intellectual curiosity, inner ASUC collaboration and student-accessible committees.

I know my traps, my temptations, my tendencies, and so listing and planning and ordering myself are necessary to avoid them.
