In the 119th edition of the Big Game, the Stanford football team once again proved its superiority over Cal, winning 45-31 Saturday at Memorial Stadium, for its seventh consecutive victory over the Bears.

Sitting down to write a column after a Cal football loss has become an all-too-common occurrence in the past few years. Since Sonny Dykes took the helm for the 2013 season, the Bears have recorded a single winning season.

With yet another matchup against a top-25 foe coming up and two wins needed in its past three games to ensure bowl eligibility, things aren’t looking very good for the Cal football team.

The first thing anyone mentions about Jake Spavital isn’t his years of experience, his coaching prowess or his family’s illustrious history of producing coaches. It’s his age.

Every time Cal football has lost, the team has been able to make up for its lows on the road with highs at home. And the Bears are back home once again, looking to avoid their first losing streak of the season.
