SAN FRANCISCO — The UC Office of the President is recommending that members of the UC community from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen do not exit the United States in light of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order restricting entry into the country.

At its Wednesday meeting, the ASUC Senate withdrew one contentious bill and passed two bills.

Two campus sophomores, John Bosshard and Alaa Aissi, recently announced their intent to run as independent ASUC Senate candidates in the spring 2016 elections.

The ASUC Senate deliberated on a resolution that would establish a BART affordability working group at its meeting Wednesday evening, ultimately passing it with a tight 10-9 vote.

Candidates and registered campus political parties spent more than $13,000 on campaigning in the 2015-16 ASUC election, an increase of more than $3,000 from last year.

Those accused of spamming would have violated Bylaw 4203 section 5.2. The bylaw prohibits candidates from sending campaign emails unless they have been given permission from the leadership of the organization they are emailing, are a member of the organization, or know the recipients personally.

The Elections Council officially filed eight cases against seven ASUC candidates this week for spamming voters with unsolicited emails or messages and for false representation.

As the 2015-16 ASUC elections draw near, independent and third-party candidates gear up for what have historically been daunting odds against the candidates of major campus parties.

The ASUC Elections Council discussed certification of remaining parties and candidates for the upcoming spring elections at their Monday meeting.

UC Berkeley freshman Matt Holtzer announced Sunday that he will run for ASUC senate as an independent candidate for the upcoming spring elections.
