On Dec. 31, the five-year contract between the University of California’s California Digital Libraries, or CDL, and Elsevier – the largest publisher of scholarly articles in the world – will expire. UC Berkeley is joining a nationwide effort to increase the availability of academic research to the public in light of rising journal subscription costs and limited access

On April 20, a mass email was sent out to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff members asking them to sign a petition in support of free, open access to research publications.
