Brendel and Corcoran led the men’s pack for most of the season, but lack of depth and standout talent was the team’s Achilles’ heel. The women also had a roster that ran shallow, but Knights and Oakley carried the team. The freshman-senior duo’s flat-out dominant performances in every meet of the season were enough to boost the the women to the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

The women will be led by the electric duo of senior Bethan Knights and freshman Brie Oakley. This will be Knights’ third trip to the NCAA championships, having gone her freshman and junior years, but this will be the first time she’ll run with her team. Oakley, on the other hand, will race in her first collegiate championship meet this Saturday. Oakley’s performance will be one to watch, having continually impressed all season long.

The women were able to garner an at-large bid to nationals later this month. The men, however, will not be traveling as a team, but rather Brendel and Corcoran will be running as individuals, earning individual bids with their top-15 finishes.

At the same meet last year, Knights placed eighth in a very competitive field, and she will be looking to produce a repeat of that performance in Seattle. Knights and Oakley have been Cal’s deadly one-two punch all season, and the Bears will be relying on them more than ever this Friday.

For every team, in every sport, at one point or another, the regular season becomes nothing but an afterthought. For the Bears, that time is now. This Friday, Cal cross country will be traveling to Oregon to compete at the Pac-12 Championships.

The Nuttycombe Invite was a tale of two races for Cal cross country. The women’s team finished with a respectable 15th place out of a field of 33, and the men placed with a more wanting result: 31st out of a field of 35.

The most challenging aspect of the day, however, will be the conditions: 69 degrees with 76 percent humidity. Those conditions make it extremely difficult even just to stand, much less to race. Conditions were also extremely hot in last month’s USF Invitational, in which both the Cal men’s and women’s teams answered with disappointing performances.

The Cal men’s team will be running the 8k, while the women will compete in the slightly shorter 5k. This, combined with the ideal weather and the relatively flat course, will be sure to produce some very impressive times. However, both races are going to be much shorter, and therefore much faster, than what either team usually trains for.
