Project scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, or Berkeley Lab, officially joined United Auto Workers, or UAW 5810, the UC academic researchers and postdoctoral scholars union, Nov. 1.

Academic workers across the UC system voted to merge UAW 2865 and UAW 5810 into one local union in a statewide referendum, the two local unions announced Saturday morning.

Members of UAW 2865 and UAW 5810 — which respectively represent about 36,000 student workers and about 11,000 researchers across the UC system — will vote to combine their two local unions into one between Oct. 10-20.

Since the strike ended, UAW 2865 and SRU-UAW members and leaders have disputed union election practices, strike strategy and the impact of their new labor contracts on their thousands of representees.

In a historic first, the Berkeley Faculty Association, or BFA, hosted a joint rally with UC-AFT Local 1474 in solidarity with UAW Local 2865, UAW Local 5810 and SRU-UAW on Wednesday.

UAW 5810, the local union representing UC academic researchers and postdoctoral scholars, reached a tentative agreement with the University of California on a new five-year contract that will last until Sept. 30, 2027, if ratified by a simple majority of union-represented workers.
