The University of California may dock pay from those participating in the ongoing academic worker strike—including faculty striking in solidarity—according to Berkeley Faculty Association Chair James Vernon. 

The UC Board of Regents reconvened Thursday to further discuss  university issues such as the ongoing academic workers’ strike, UCLA’s possible transition to the Big 10 and general community safety plans.

The UC Regents assembled at UCSF Mission Bay on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing UAW strike, civic engagement and SVSH training compliance rates.

Four bargaining units of UAW, which represents nearly 50,000 student academic workers and researchers across the UC, voted to strike Wednesday evening with 98% in favor to strike.

UC Berkeley academic workers and researchers could be seen tabling throughout campus Wednesday with signs asking union members to participate in the ongoing UAW strike vote. 

Nearly all of the 1,500 graduate students, postdocs and student researchers present at Memorial Glade raised their hands with a resounding “aye!” during the UAW members meeting Thursday, unanimously calling for a statewide strike authorization vote.

Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and academic researchers have won protections against bullying and abusive workplace conduct in a tentative agreement with the UC system.

Represented by the UAW union, 48,000 academic workers across the UC campuses are negotiating with the University of California, or UC, to demand greater progress on social and economic issues. 

Academic workers in the department of plant and microbial biology protested against alleged bullying in the department July 28 and hand-delivered a letter to David Ackerly, dean of the Rausser College of Natural Resources, demanding immediate action.

Hundreds of graduate student workers, represented by the union United Auto Workers, or UAW, protested UC employment policies on the UC Berkeley campus Tuesday.
