At the end of his term, former governor Jerry Brown appointed Jonathan “Jay” Sures to the UC Board of Regents — a white man to an already predominantly white male board. Gov. Gavin Newsom must not fall in the footsteps of his predecessors and appoint regents that reflect the diversity of California.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom is projected to win the race for California governor, while former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Eleni Kounalakis is leading in the lieutenant governor race as of press time at 12:23 a.m. Wednesday.

Despite several major campus leadership position not yet permanently filled, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks announced in a campuswide email Monday that the administration will not begin filling in these positions — those decisions will be left up to his successor.

As students have come forward to report discriminatory acts they say have pervaded UC campuses over the past few years, the University of California Board of Regents is attempting to find a resolution.
