‘Charcoal as food’: UC Berkeley study analyzes role of ‘fire-loving’ fungi

Postdoctoral researcher Monika Fischer led a study aiming to understand the role of Pyronema, a genus of fungus that thrives in post-fire environments.

Fischer initiated the study in 2019 with Matthew Traxler, an Assistant Professor in Plants and Microbial Biology, as the corresponding author in an attempt to explain the role of Pyronema after a wildfire, according to Traxler. He added that graduate student Frances Stark and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were also involved in the study.
