People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, filed a formal complaint with the US Department of Agriculture on May 12, urging the department to investigate possible violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act in UC Berkeley laboratories. 

Time and time again, labs have shown that an animal’s use as a tool supersedes its existence as a living, breathing creature.

UC Berkeley senior and Public Health major Rachel Chung is food insecure. From a low-income family, she pays for her own education and works 15 to 20 hours a week at her work study job. Often, eating nutritional food — and sometimes eating food at all — is not a priority.
