Cal softball leaves Florida tournament with stunning wins, disappointing losses

Cal softball, similarly, seemed to hit preseason highs and lows this weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational in Florida, where the Bears played five teams — four of which were ranked in the top 25, according to Softball America — and lost to three of them.

Cal softball starts promising season with 3 victories in first tournament

OK, yeah. Maybe the phrase “come out swinging” has become a bit of a trope.
But that’s exactly what Cal softball did over the weekend in Lafayette, Louisiana at the Ragin’ Cajuns Classic as the team secured its first three wins of their season with flying colors and dropped two against a top-20 team.

In what was a tough end to their eight-game winning streak, the Bears dropped all three games against top-ranked UCLA over the weekend. The Bruins outscored Cal, 17-6, over the course of the series and simply out-competed the Bears on both sides of the ball.

Cal softball proves superior in rivalry series, sweeps Stanford

Cal improved to 7-10 in Pac-12 play and 33-13 overall thanks to six consecutive conference wins in the series against Utah and Stanford. Stanford is now tied for last place in the conference with a 2-16 conference record and is 22-26 overall.

The last time the two squads played, the Bears eked out a close 1-0 win in a bona fide pitcher’s duel. Neither Cal redshirt junior Zoe Conley nor UC Davis freshman Brooke Yanez allowed more than four hits, and the game remained tied until the sixth inning.
